Singer Suchitra Mitra passes away

Singer Suchitra Mitra died at her South Kolkata residence on Monday. The 86-years-old singer suffered cardiac arrest at around 1:30 pm, while she was having her lunch. She is survived by a son Kunal, who lives in the US, and her adopted daughter, Sudeshna Chatterjee. All her admirers, from her fans to her students rushed to her residence to pay their last visit to her with full of tears and shock. Her last journey will start today morning. She will first be taken to the Rabindra Bharati University, where she was a professor for long and later her body will be kept at Rabindra Sadan for public tributes. Her last rites will be performed at the Keoratala crematorium in the afternoon.
Suchitra, born in 1924, entertained the music lovers with her sweet version of Tagore songs for six decades. Though Suchitra had not performed in public for several years due to failing health, she had not lost her popularity among the music lovers. Her recordings and CDs still continue to dominate the popularity ratings. Suchitra, informed one of the close friend in the family, described her life as “extremely well lived.” However, the veteran died with one regret buried in her heart, she had a wish to meet her master Rabindranath Tagore. But, to her bad luck, she joined Visva Bharati as a scholarship student exactly 20 days after Tagore's demise. Suchitra grieved about the loss her entire life.
