Shiney Ahuja jailed for 7 years in rape case

A Mumbai court on Wednesday convicted Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja to seven years in jail on charges of raping his 20-year-old domestic maid. The Bombay High Court had earlier in October 2009 granted bail to him. Ahuja was arrested on June 15 after preliminary medical tests on the girl confirmed sexual assault. He was charged under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 376 with rape, along with wrongful restraint and intimidation. Ahuja continued to maintain his innocence in the case.
In September last year, the maid had backtracked from her allegations that Shiney had raped her at his residence in Mumbai and said the incident had never occurred. The 20-year-old girl told the court that she had filed the complaint against the actor at the behest of the woman who had secured her the job of a maid in Shiney's residence. Earlier, in June 2009, the girl had lodged a police complaint alleging that she was raped by the actor at his residence. Shiney was arrested on June 14 and released on bailthree months later. On September 3 last year, the victim had identified Shiney in the court and said she used to work at his residence as a domestic help. But when asked about the incident, she said she was never raped. Following this, the court had declared her hostile.

Reliance Broadcast Network Limited (RBNL) is all set to launch its new channel, BIG Magic on 4th April that will feature comedy, music and Bollywood content, all provided for a local audience, unlike the two recently launched BIG CBS English language channels, Prime and Love, which carry predominantly US programming. “The Hindi heartland represents 30% of India’s population, and by far the most attractive and lucrative market for advertisers,” said Tarun Katial, chief executive officer, RBNL. “This underserviced market offers an excellent opportunity to offer audiences entertainment that is tailored to meet their preferences. “BIG Magic will quickly build a strong platform on the back of an excellent programming mix and leveraging our BIG FM’s brand lineage to help fortify its position rapidly,” he added.
Big Magic will be distributed across multiple cable TV networks including DEN, Digicable, WWIL and Hathway in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The broadcaster expects it to be reached by about 10 million households in the region, who will be made aware of the new channel’s arrival by a widespread marketing campaign. The television spend in the combined area of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar is reported to be approximately Rs1,200 crore. National TV channels account for about Rs 1,050 crore of this total.

Elizabeth Taylor, one of the greatest actresses of Hollywood’s golden age, passed away today. She was 79. Taylor was suffering from heart problems and other old age related health issues lately. I-T raids on Nagarjuna and Telugu film actors

Income Tax officials on Wednesday raided the office and residences of popular Telugu movie stars Akkineni Nagarjuna, Anushka and Ravi Teja. They also raided the Nagarajuna family-owned Annapurna Studios, residence of his brother and producer Akkineni Venkat and another producer Shiva Prasad Reddy of Kamakshi Movies. I-T department sources said that the raids were in connection with some real estate and other transactions which have found no reflection in the advanced tax payments made by them. Nagarjuna is one of the richest stars in the industry, commanding Rs 10 crore per film.
He has stake in a popular TV entertainment channel, a state-of-art Convention Centre in Hitech City and a chain of restaurants. I-T sources further said that they were looking into the money transfer between different accounts of these stars. A major land deal in the port city of Visakhpatnam is also under the scanner. I-T officials said that the raids were continuing.

Film producers in Karnataka have slapped a year-long ban on actress Ramya, following her rift with producer A Ganesh. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has decided not to sign Ramya for any movie for one year. The popular actress had earlier announced her decision to quit the film industry after the controversy with Ganesh, producer of 'Dandam Dashagunam', production of which has just concluded. She went public with the spat and said Ganesh had not returned Rs 9 lakh he had borrowed from her. She had also boycotted the audio release of the film. Actor Bob Christo passes away

Australian born Bob Christo, who essayed villain roles in several films, died at a hospital here on Sunday. Mr. Christo, 72, was undergoing treatment at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research here after suffering a heart attack on Friday. After his stint in Bollywood, where he acted in several hits such as Kaalia, Mard and Mr India, Mr. Christo bid adieu to the film world in 2000. Actor Navin Nischol passes away

Film and television actor Navin Nischol died of a heart attack at his residence in suburban Mumbai today. He made his debut with the 1970 box-office hit film Sawan Bhadon, where he starred opposite Rekha. The first gold medalist from the Film and Television Institute of India to make it big, he starred in several superhits, such as Buddha Mil Gaya, The Burning Train, Khosla Ka Ghosla!, etc.
He also managed to carve a successful television career for himself by acting in serials such as Dekh Bhai Dekh. In the last few years, things did not go too well for Navin Nischol. In 2006, he had been charged with abetting his wife Geetanjali's suicide. The veteran actor was last seen on silver screen in Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006) and Break Ke Baad (2010).

Maharashtra single-screen Cinemas on strike from 25 March

Single screen cinema halls in Maharashtra will go on a one week strike from March 25 to demand the reduction or abolishment of entertainment tax. 'Yes, we are going on a strike because we want to protest against the huge entertainment tax that we pay. We want it to get abolished or at least reduced. We have sent the government many letters requesting the same, but the government has not paid any heed,' R.V. Vidhani, president of the Cinema Owners and Exhibitors' Association, told IANS. 'We are paying 45 percent entertainment tax. In many states, it has been abolished, but in Maharashtra we still have to pay it. Multiplexes also get concession but not the single screens. It has become very difficult for us to survive and the government should understand that,' he added. Earlier, there were around 1,080 single screen cinema halls in Maharashtra but only 650 are left.

International film festival in Shimla from 18-20 March 2011

Film division of the Union ministry of Information and Broadcasting has proposed to increase the cash price for the award winning films to be screened during the three-day international film festival here. V Packirisamy director of film division said about 40 documentaries, short duration films and animation films would be shown during the festival to be held from March 18 to 20.
He said this was for the first time that international film festival was being organised outside Mumbai so that more youths and budding talents interested in pursuing film-making as a career could get exposure. Chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal will inaugurate the festival tomorrow in the Gaiety theatre here.

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt is all set to dance to an item number 'Shake It Saiyaan' in the film Rascals directed by David Dhawan. The cited film is being jointly produced by Rupali Aum Entertainment and Sanjay Dutt Productions. The song set to the tunes of the ace music composer duo Vishal-Shekhar is being choreographed by Bosco.
