The film tells the tale of the doomed love between Prince Saleem and the beautiful commoner Aanerkali, set against the splendour of Emperor Akbar’s 16th Kingdom. Emperor Akbar cannot accept his son, the future king, will marry a woman below his status and a mighty battle of wills follow. The extraordinary dialogue, enchanting music by Naushad Ali and lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni, spectacular sets, and performances by the wonderful cast, including Prithiraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Durga Khote and Ajit have all worked together to make this film stand apart. Akbar Asif, like his father, is a single-minded man who believes in finding ways of keeping this cinematic treasure relevant and alive. Along with Shapoorji Mistry, they released a colourised version in 2006, so young audiences could see that Mughal-E-Azam indeed merits all the praise that has been showed on it over five decades. Now Akbar Asif asked the celebrated artists M.F.Husain to regard Mughal-E-Azam as his muse, and pay a personal tribute to his most favourite film. M.F.Husain has recreated the fabulously mounted scenes in a series of exquisite paintings. Each brush stroke delicately captures the soul and spirit of K.Asif’s film. Through “Mughal-E-Azam—A tribute from Akbar Asif to K.Asif”, Shah Rukh Khan shows his high regard for a son’s determination to preserve the work of his father, and in doing so preserve the legacy of Indian cinema. This documentary celebrates a most perfect film that will always be a part of all our lives and histories.
